Tools and websites that may be useful for coaching - EFA NCAS coaching resourcesThe International Society for Equitation Science is a not-for-profit organisation with the primary function of facilitating research into the training and welfare of horses. The idea of founding a Society devoted to equitation science had first been raised during discussions following the Havemeyer Foundation Workshop on Horse Behavior and Welfare in Iceland in 2002. Since then, equitation science has developed rapidly. The discipline combines learning theory, psychology and ethology in order to objectively examine the efficiency of different training methods. For more information and access to the veterinary papers as well as applications for membership to the International Society for Equitation Science go to www.equitationscience.com Useful information on the site includes the 2005 Conference Paper, outlining a glossary of equitation terms. Additional past conference papers can also be downloaded from the site.

Synthetic Waterproof Rugs
I recommend you don't use detergents or chemical on synthetic waterproof rugs, this can damage the waterproofing membrane. Hand wash them in cold water or wipe with a damp cloth or sponge. (Never scrub).

Avoid hosing with a high pressure hose.
Refer to care labels on individual rugs, if available.

Hang out to dry in a well-ventilated area with the outer coating facing up. (Don’t use a dryer) Even waterproof rugs get damp in extended heavy rain, and I suggest you remove and dry when possible.

Poly Cotton Rugs can generally be washed just like clothing, avoid drying in a clothes dryer.

Canvas Rug Care
Unlike other rugs - canvas needs a little TLC before using. To insure the long life and durability of your canvas rug - please follow these instructions:

Prior to using I suggest you thoroughly wet the canvas with a hose and let the rug dry fully in the sun. This allows the fabric to settle, failing to do this your rug may absorb excessive water in the initial exposure to rain.

Store away only when completely dry - or you may get your rug out and find it very mouldy!

Never scrub canvas - use a damp cloth or brush the fabric with a soft brush when any dirt has dried. Don't use soaps, detergents or other liquid cleaners.
Remove mildew as it appears, and dry in the sun.

All Canvas rugs are not technically waterproof - the waxy coating is designed to repel light showers & wont stand up to heavy or prolonged weather, the thickness and tight weave helps to slow the seeping process. With exposure to heavy or prolonged periods of rain - you will need to remove canvas regularly and dry out completely.
Canvas rugs come treated with a waxy coating that is applied to the outside of the rug to help repel water. This breaks down with exposure and you may need to apply a waterproof coating every 12 months to reproof the canvas.
